The Widow Rockfish, known to fishermen as the Brown Bomber and to shoppers as a rock cod, is a hard-bottom dwelling finfish found along the Weset Coast from Baja to Alaska
If you have ever cleaned one of these fish, you might have noticed that there is a black lining to the internal organs. It is believed that because they feed in night schools on bioluminescent animals, they developed a dark lining to keep their bellies from glowing through their flesh as they digested their light-emitting prey. The scientific for the Bomber is Sebastes Entomelas - "sebastes" from the Greek for "magnificent", and "entomelas" for "dark inside".
These fish have been harvested commercially since 1978 when their night-schooling behavior was discovered by California fishermen.
