The Market Squid is a prolific and fast-growing species of cephalopod harvested commercially from California to Oregon. Like an annual plant, they live one year, reproduce, and die - replacing their own entire population each year.

The squid are harvested at night with the help of powerful lights that draw them to the surface and concentrate them. Boats then surround and capture them in seine nets.

The scientific name is Doryteuthis Opalescens. "Doryteuthis" comes from the Greek meaning "gift squid" and "opalescens" meaning like an opal, or "having a milky brightness and a play of colors from the surface".
